Looking for a few relaxing days on a tropical island in West Malaysia? Then Langkawi might be exactly what you need.
Part of an archipelago of 99 islands, Langkawi offers white-sand beaches, turquoise bays, lush mountains, waterfalls, and a warm tropical climate that’s pleasant almost year-round. Whether you’re here to unwind or explore, this island truly has something for everyone.
Where Is Langkawi?
Langkawi is just:
-
30–40 minutes by flight from Kuala Lumpur or Penang
-
Around 2.5 hours by ferry from the mainland
The island is lush and green, surrounded by 98 smaller islands scattered across the Andaman Sea. Wherever you stand, you’ll likely see another island on the horizon — perfect for island hopping adventures.
Did you know?
Langkawi is very close to Thailand. You can even travel by boat between Langkawi and Thai islands such as Koh Lipe during certain seasons.
What Is Langkawi Like?
Most visitors to Langkawi are Malaysians, which means the island feels relatively calm outside national holidays (especially December and January).
Langkawi is also a duty-free island, meaning alcohol, chocolate, and cosmetics are significantly cheaper than on mainland Malaysia.
The main tourist hub is Pantai Cenang. It’s not the prettiest town architecturally, but it has everything you need — restaurants, shops, tour operators, bars, and easy beach access.
Want to explore beyond Cenang? Rent a scooter. Within 30 minutes, you can reach almost any corner of the island.
Tip: We rented a scooter for MYR 35 per day — one of the best and most affordable ways to explore.
How Long Should You Stay in Langkawi?
I recommend staying at least four nights.
Langkawi is bigger than most people expect, and there are several must-do activities. It’s also the perfect place to slow down and relax.
We stayed seven nights and were never bored.
The 6 Best Things to Do in Langkawi
1. Ride the Langkawi SkyCab & Walk the SkyBridge
One of the island’s most famous attractions is the Langkawi SkyCab, known as one of the steepest cable car rides in the world.
The ride itself is spectacular — rainforest below, ocean views stretching endlessly. Once at the top, you can walk across the SkyBridge, suspended 660 meters above sea level.
It’s thrilling. Slightly scary. Absolutely worth it.
Opening hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Arrive early or late afternoon to avoid long queues.
There’s also a small entertainment complex at the base, including a 3D Art Gallery (fun) and Skydome (less impressive).
Budget Tip:
Buying tickets online (for example through platforms like Klook) can save you around MYR 50–60 per person, and sometimes includes SkyBridge access.
2. Discover the Most Beautiful Beaches
Langkawi has several stunning beaches, each with a different vibe.
Pantai Cenang – Lively & Central
The busiest beach on the island, lined with hotels, restaurants, and water sports. Expect jet skis, parasailing, and a social atmosphere. The sand is soft, and sunsets here are beautiful.
Pantai Tengah – Quieter but Close
Just south of Cenang, this beach is much more peaceful. Walk left upon arrival to find a hidden stretch behind a large rock formation. Perfect for sunset lovers.
Pantai Kok – Scenic & Peaceful
Located in the west, near the cable car. One stretch overlooks sailing boats and nearby islands. Parts of it are private, but the public sections are beautifully quiet.
Tanjung Rhu – The Most Beautiful Beach
Located in the northeast, this is often considered Langkawi’s prettiest beach. Turquoise water, limestone islands in the distance, monkeys under the trees, and far fewer crowds.
Walk north along the beach past the luxury resorts and you may find yourself completely alone in paradise.
Pantai Pasir Tengkorak (Skulls Beach)
A beach with a dark history linked to an old prison island in Thailand. Today, it’s mostly visited by local families. Not the most stunning beach, but worth a visit for the story and island views.
Note: Datai Bay nearby is private and only accessible to hotel guests.
3. Go Island Hopping
Langkawi is part of a 99-island archipelago. Many islands are uninhabited and incredibly beautiful.

4. Visit the Seven Wells Waterfall (Telaga Tujuh)
Located in northwest Langkawi, this waterfall features multiple natural pools.
After a short climb, you reach the lower waterfall. Continue upward to reach the natural pools where you can swim and cool off. The water is refreshingly cool compared to the sea.
Entry is free.
You can also try the nearby zipline for extra adventure.
5. Relax at Dash Beach Club
Located at the southern end of Pantai Tengah, Dash Beach Club offers:

It’s one of the best places for a stylish, relaxed afternoon.
6. Explore the Mangroves
Mangrove forests can be explored in both northeast and northwest Langkawi.
A typical tour includes:
